August 20, 2018

Huntington St. Joe's McKenzie Moran scored five goals, including the 100th of her career, in a 9-1 high school girls soccer victory over Linsly School on Saturday.

HUNTINGTON — Huntington St. Joe got five goals from McKenzie Moran, including the 100th of her career, and a three-goal hat trick from Abi Hugh in a 9-1 girls soccer victory Saturday over Linsly School of Wheeling at the Huntington YMCA Kennedy Center.

Moran, a senior, scored her first goal of the day on an assist by Laney Whitmore at 26:33 of the first half. The assist was one of four on the day for Whitmore, who also added a goal.

Whitmore assisted on Moran’s second goal at the 47:27 mark before the Gonzaga University commitment added a third goal unassisted at 50:25.

The duo connected twice more, the final goal coming at 76:11 that gave Moran the 100 mark and set the score.

St. Joe assistant coach Ben Eng said Moran normally wouldn’t be in the game with the Fighting Irish holding such a large lead. But Eng said with St. Joe looking at a stretch of road games it meant a lot to Moran to score the 100th goal at home.

Moran earned an assist on a pass that set up the first of Hugh’s goals. Hugh’s other goals were unassisted.

The game was the first of the season for the teams and the first half of a doubleheader with the Huntington St. Joe boys team facing Cabell Midland in the second match. The boys contest was halted with 2:14 left in the first half because of thunder in the area. If it can’t be rescheduled, it will be ruled a draw.

Cabell Midland opened the scoring on a penalty kick by Simon Anton at 1:50 of the game. The Knights earned the scoring attempt when sophomore midfielder Garrett Shields was taken down in the penalty box.

Shields added an unassisted goal at 9:56 to make it 2-0 before Anton struck again at 34:26, assisted by Ethan Ball to make it 3-0. Several minutes later the game was stopped.

St. Joe head coach Chuck Karnes and Cabell Midland head coach Brian McNeel agreed to halt the game at that point. The stoppage with time remaining in the first half means if the two coaches can come to an agreement to reschedule, the match will resume where it left off.

Another St. Joe girls and boys doubleheader is Tuesday at Ashland with kickoffs at 6 and 8 p.m. respectively. Cabell Midland hosts South Charleston at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
