Gering man arrested, accused of possessing child pornography
A 46-year-old Gering man will be arraigned Monday, charged with possessing child pornography.
Robert Newton has been charged with possession of child pornography, a Class IIA felony.
According to an arrest warrant, a Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s deputy had executed a search warrant on Dec. 18 at a residence on County Road 20 as part of a WING task force investigation on drug and weapons violations. As part of that investigation, Newton’s cell phone was seized and the deputy obtained a warrant to search the phone on Jan. 8 and digital information regarding the contents of the phone were provided to the deputy on Feb. 11.
As the deputy searched the digital information for materials in the drug investigation, he went through images that had been on the cell phone. Images contained images advising of child pornography. The child pornography included a female child and images of beastality. The deputy contacted the county attorney’s office, advising of the images found, and obtained a second warrant to continue to search the images. The deputy reported finding additional images of child pornography.
A warrant for Newton’s arrest was issued on March 8 and he was taken into custody. His bond is currently set at 10 percent of $50,000.
Newton is currently scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in the case.
