Middle Schools Champions crowned in soccer, volleyball

The Middle School Sports Championships were recently held in Greenwich recently, as soccer and volleyball teams showcased their skills in title games.

Central Middle Schools’ volleyball team successfully defended its middle school title with a 2-0 win over Western Middle School. The co-ed team defeated Eastern Middle School in the semifinals to advance to the finals against top-seeded Western.

Both teams exhibited strong passing and serving throughout the match, which saw the Cougars claim the championship for the second straight year.

Central Middle School’s championship squad included: James Kovac, Eisley Young, Sophia Pino, Emily Perna, Chloe Brown, Talia Muir, Morgan Lau, Isabella Love-Horton, Isabella Gega, Maggie Saleeby, Kaitlin Kelly, Lucia Spanjol, Victoria Ford, Catherine Ford, Izabella Erceg and Cecilia Bueti. The team was coached by Jaimee Previs.

In boys’ soccer action at the Middle School Championships, Western Middle school soccer team beat Eastern, 1-0, for the title. Nick Carvalho, an eighth-grader/captain, scored in the final 10 minutes, giving Western a 1-0 lead.

The goal came after a scoreless first half, featuring strong defensive play by both teams. Eighth-grader/captain Isaiah Dumeny helped lead Western’s solid defensive effort. Western defeated Eastern twice during the regular season, with both games ending, 1-0. The championship win concluded a 7-0-1 season for Western Middle School.

Western Middle School’s championship soccer team included: Javier Peralta, Pietro Carvalho, Alejandro Torrealva, Edgar Coc, Sebastian Osorio, Franklin Sousa, Damoni Brown, Nick Carvalho, Andre Portilla, Benny Molina, Rodrigo Vera, Gerardo Guerra, Leo Martins, Jack Konigsberg, Leroy Obaanda, Amadeo Furano, Josh Velazquez, Isaiah Dumeny, Michael Narvaez and Michael Morales. The team was coached by Alex DeFeo Schuck.

In girls’ soccer action, the Eastern Middle School capped an undefeated season with a championship-game win against Western Middle School. Eastern defeated Western, 4-2 in the title game.
