Woman Rescued, Then Arrested After Stunt

August 5, 1987

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) _ A young woman who tried to prove she could swim while wearing handcuffs was rescued by police - and then arrested.

Long Beach Police Commissioner Sol Barnett said Wednesday that Officer William Dodge swam out to rescue Rachel Natal, 19, of Queens, about 150 feet from shore near a jetty in the Atlantic Ocean.

Barnett said he did not know how long the woman was in the water before the rescue Tuesday evening.

He said she suffered minor bruises from being pounded against the rocks by waves and was treated at Long Beach Hospital.

After the rescue, Ms. Natal was arrested for disorderly conduct and released on $50 bail to her parents’ custody. Ms. Natal was arraigned Wednesday morning and was told the charge would be dismissed if she stayed out of trouble for six months.
