BLOOMING PRAIRIE — An early morning fire on New Year’s Day destroyed one home and damaged another.

Blooming Prairie police and fire departments as well as the Steele County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched around 3:30 a.m. to a report of a structure fire in the area of Main Street and U.S. Highway 218, according to Blooming Prairie Police Sgt. Mark Lang.

When firefighters arrived at the home in the 500 block of East Main Street, it was nearly fully engulfed in flames, Lang said.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

The cause is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal. Lang did not have a dollar amount for the damage but said the home was a total loss after it “burned in on itself.”

A nearby residence was evacuated as a precaution and sustained slight damage to its exterior, Lang said.

Hayfield and Ellendale fire departments assisted, as well as Blooming Prairie Ambulance.
