Man charged with assault in shooting outside nursing home
RIDGELAND, Miss. (AP) — A 39-year-old man has made his first court appearance since being accused of shooting his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend outside a central Mississippi nursing home.
Local media report that Sam Johnson appeared in court Friday and is charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
He was arrested more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) away Thursday, hours after the shooting in the parking lot of a Ridgeland nursing home. Ridgeland Police Chief John Neal said Johnson was arrested in Grenada.
Neal says a 35-year-old man was waiting to pick up the 32-year-old woman from work when Johnson arrived. After a disturbance, Neal says Johnson shot the two people.
The woman was shot once while the man, shot multiple times, was wounded more seriously. Neal says both are expected to recover.
