Fossil Day set for Saturday at Grave Creek Mound
MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia State Geologist B. Mitchel Blake Jr. will provide expert fossil identification Saturday during Fossil Day at Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex in Moundsville.
The event runs from noon to 4 p.m. and also provides other activities related to fossils. Fossil Day is free and open to the public.
Blake is also director of the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey in Morgantown, where he’s worked since 1978, specializing in basin analysis and Appalachian coal geology.
The state Division of Culture and History said in a news release that the West Virginia Fossil Club will display fossils, and family activities will include looking for small fossils, making a clay fossil bed that will be excavated in September and creating imprints in clay.
