Umpqua knocks off Chemeketa in three
SALEM — It’s early in the league season, but the Umpqua Community College volleyball team scored a significant victory on the road Wednesday night.
The Riverhawks defeated defending Northwest Athletic Conference tournament champion Chemeketa in three sets, winning by scores of 26-24, 25-19, 25-13 in the Southern Region match.
Umpqua (10-10, 2-1 South) is tied with Lane and Clark for second in the league standings. Linn-Benton (19-9, 3-0) is in first.
Freshman Amiyah Shakoor finished with 11 kills for Umpqua against the Storm.
McKenna Wilson had seven kills, Shayla Limatoc contributed six kills and South Umpqua High product Emma Lind chipped in five kills.
Madison Becker had 24 assists in the win. Wilson made 12 digs, Kyrie Keffer had nine digs and Lind and Becker each added seven digs. Bailey Crawford-Caroll made three stuff-blocks.
Delaney Smith led the Storm (7-14, 1-2) with 12 kills. Kailee Sorenson had 34 assists.
UCC travels to Oregon City on Saturday to face Clackamas.
