Rios Wins Davis Cup Tennis Match
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) _ In his first match since being ranked No. 1 in the world, Marcelo Rios defeated Hernan Gumy 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 today, giving Chile a 1-0 lead over Argentina in their American Zone Davis Cup second-round series.
Rios had ended Pete Sampras’ 102-week reign atop the ATP Tour rankings by winning the Lipton Championships with a 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Andre Agassi on Sunday.
Gumy, ranked 103rd in the world, put up a good fight and it took Rios nearly three hours to win the opener of the best-of-5 series.
Loud cheers and chants by fans of both countries gave the match a raucous backdrop.
The match was largely a baseline battle, with a bigger and stronger Gumy attempting to outmaneuver Rios. But Rios’ pinpoint shots moved the slower Gumy around the court.
The sometimes testy Rios showed a lighter side by kicking balls into the stands and looking up as Chileans wildly waved their flag and shouted, ``Chile!″
Argentines just as loudly cheered for Gumy.
