Clash 2, MetroStars 1
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Ronald Cerritos’ goal with 23 seconds left forced a shootout and John Doyle scored the winning goal in the tiebreaker as the San Jose Clash beat the New York-New Jersey MetroStars 2-1 Saturday night.
Eddie Lewis, Dario Brose and Alejandro Sequeira also scored in the shootout for the Clash (14-10).
The MetroStars (5-21) lost their 11th consecutive game.
Dallas held a 1-0 lead for most of the game, following Billy Walsh’s goal in the ninth minute. But with the Clash pushing forward in the final minute, Cerritos took a shot from the middle of the penalty arc and beat goalkeeper Tim Howard just inside the left post.
In the shootout, the MetroStars took leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 on goals by Petter Villegas, Miles Joseph and Ramiro Carrales. But Lewis, Brose and Sequeira countered, Clash goalkeeper Joe Cannon stopped Mark Semioli’s attempt in the seventh round, and Doyle then made the game-winner.
