Suspect convicted of attempted murder in armored car robbery
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A Sacramento County jury has convicted a suspect of attempted murder in a shootout with an armored car guard that left both men critically wounded.
The district attorney’s office said Monday that Gilbert Smith was convicted Friday of attempted murder, robbery and possessing a firearm as a felon.
He was already out on bail on a pending armed robbery case in July 2016 when he approached a Brinks guard carrying a bag of money from a Golden 1 Credit Union branch in south Sacramento.
Smith was disguised as a construction worker with a mask, sunglasses and a bandanna covering his face. He shot the guard, who fired back, hitting Smith several times.
The guard’s wounds required multiple surgeries.
Smith faces up to life in prison at his sentencing next month.
