Alborn Named To US Jumping Team
PARK CITY, Utah (AP) _ Alan Alborn of Anchorage, Alaska, who looks more like a choirboy than an emerging World Cup contender, heads a three-athlete U.S. Ski Jumping Team named today for next winter.
Alborn, 18, scored World Cup points in three competitions last season, his first full season on the World Cup tour. Coach Kari Ylianttila, who announced the 1999-2000 team, said he planned to work during the preseason on strengthening Alborn’s takeoff for each jump.
In addition, Rhys Hecox of Ishpeming, Mich., who returned to the sport after two seasons away from ski competition, and 1998 Olympian Brendan Doran of Steamboat Springs, Colo., were named to the national B Team. Hecox won a Continental Cup meet in Finland in March, the first merican victory since Doran won in Westby, Wis., in 1995.
Named to the national development team were Ben Erlandson, 16, of Westby, Wis.; Andrew Newcomb, 18, of Park City; and Clint Jones, 14, Tommy Schwall, 14, and Logan Gerber, 15, all of Steamboat Springs.
