Tulane 1, North Carolina St. 0
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Gerald Alexander pitched six innings of no-hit ball before finishing with a two-hitter and Elliot Quinones’ eighth-inning single scored the game’s only run Thursday as the Green Wave blanked North Carolina State 1-0 victory in the first round of the NCAA East Regional tournament.
Alexander, 11-4, lost his no-hitter when Brian Bark singled on the first pitch of the seventh inning.
The right-hander from Donaldsonville, La., struck out six and walked four. The Wolfpack’s other hit was a double by pinch-hitter Clyde Boyette in the eighth.
The Wolfpack, which had not been shut out all season, failed to advance a runner to third base.
Quinones, who had two of the Green Wave’s four hits, singled in the only run of the game off Jeff Hartsock, 11-3.
Hartsock didn’t allow a hit until two outs in the fifth when Tulane’s Richard Parker singled. Quinones, a junior outfielder who entered the game with a team-high .399 average, also singled in the sixth inning.
Tulane, 32-16, will play Florida State on Friday in a winners’ bracket game in the double-elimination tourney.
The Wolfpack, 44-15, faces top-seeded Florida Friday. The winner of Thursday night’s George Mason-Stetson contest plays the Tulane-Florida State loser Friday.
