St. Mary’s, Service Wire partner to bring GoNoodle to Putnam schools

January 2, 2019

HUNTINGTON — Service Wire, a locally based wire and cable manufacturer, has partnered with St. Mary’s Medical Center to continue to provide Putnam County elementary students with free access to GoNoodle Plus, a set of online movement and mindfulness videos to encourage students to be active and practice moments of mindfulness in the classroom.

Representatives from Service Wire and St. Mary’s recently visited Hurricane Town Elementary School, where students from Amy Basler’s third-grade class demonstrated their favorite GoNoodle activities. The visit also included a guest appearance by Flappy Tuckler, one of the GoNoodle characters.

According to a news release, school staff expressed how pleased they were with the program as they often use the GoNoodle activities daily to provide a mental break and re-focus students. Already this school year, an estimated 2,900 Putnam County elementary students have logged thousands of minutes of in-classroom physical activity as they run, jump, dance and participate in calming activities next to their desks using GoNoodle.

Thanks to St. Mary’s and its local business partners, GoNoodle Plus is offered to local students in a 12-county area that includes Cabell and Putnam counties.

GoNoodle is a website-based program that provides hundreds of dance-alongs, mindfulness videos and other ways to get kids moving. These activities help engage children’s minds and bodies and help them perform their best in the classroom.

David Hanzlik, the director of partner management for Nashville-based GoNoodle, previously told The Herald-Dispatch the program was designed to get students’ bodies moving and blood pumping, which, in turn, gets more blood to the brain, or their “noodles.”

“We know when you activate your body, you activate your brain,” Hanzlik said. “Our main mission and main goal is to get kids up and moving and being less sedative inside the classroom.”

The benefits of GoNoodle include improved behavior and attention span, increased academic performance and strengthened classroom cohesion. The premium version, GoNoodle Plus, brings movement, mindfulness and core subjects together to develop fluency in grade-specific math and English and language arts topics.

Service Wire is a second-generation, family-owned wire and cable manufacturer with corporate headquarters in Culloden and offices in Phoenix, Ariz., and Houston, Texas. It is celebrating 50 years in business.
