GHBA Remodelers Council You can have year-round outdoor living in Houston

December 30, 2018

It may be December, but that doesn’t mean outdoor living is impossible. Not only does the winter season bring some of the best weather of the year in the Houston area, it is also the ideal time to plan for spring living.

With a few tips, tricks and upgrades, year-round outdoor living can be better than ever.

1. Screen the back porch with motorized screens. Say good-bye to mosquitoes, love-bugs and other creepy crawlies. A screened-in back porch will provide a bug-free environment for every season, making your outdoor living space enjoyable all year.

Also, by adding motorized screens, harsh glares from the mid-afternoon sun will be decreased, creating a comfortable gathering space from sunrise

to sundown.

2. Swap out real grass for synthetic turf. Maintaining a real grass lawn can result in an expensive water bill, or worse, an unsightly brown lawn full of dead grass. By upgrading your lawn to synthetic turf, you will cut down on monthly expenses, reduce lawn maintenance, eliminate the risk of fire ants and bug infestations, and enjoy the beauty of lush, green grass year-long. Bonus: you won’t upset any neighbors with a large brown eyesore.

3. Outdoor entertaining is all the craze. If you pride yourself on being the party house, it’s time to move the party outside. Expand your next celebration to the backyard, complete with an outdoor courtyard, full dining space, state-of-the-art grill, fire pit or fireplace, and home bar.

4. Upgrade and cool down with mini split A/C units. It’s no secret that the Houston summer heat is often unbearable. Luckily, that doesn’t mean you have to stow away inside from May to October.

Mini split air conditioning units will be your new best friend, especially in the heart of summer. Mounted flush on the outdoor wall, these compact and discreet units provide a stream of cool air when you need it most.

By implementing these simple improvements, your outdoor living just got a whole lot better — year round. And, don’t forget to take advantage of the cooler winter months to create an upgraded outdoor space for next year’s spring and summer seasons.
