Typhoon Approaches Southern Japan

September 18, 1998

TOKYO (AP) _ A powerful typhoon was moving toward the southern Japanese island of Kyushu today, threatening to bring heavy rains and strong winds.

Typhoon Todd, packing sustained winds of 78 mph, was southeast of Tanegashima island at the southern tip of Kyushu. Tanegashima is about 626 miles southwest of Tokyo.

The typhoon, the sixth of the season, was moving northwest at 25 mph, according to the Meteorological Agency.

The agency predicted that the center of the typhoon would pass over Kyushu later today. It warned of the possibility of landslides.

The typhoon was not expected to pass over Japan’s more heavily populated main island.
