Grand Island police identify officer, man he fatally shot
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Grand Island police have identified an officer and a man he fatally shot after police say the man attacked the officer with a knife.
A news release Thursday from police says Officer Rick Ehlers shot 29-year-old Benjamin Melendez, of Grand Island, the night of March 13.
Police say Ehlers fired his service weapon when Melendez attacked and injured the officer. Melendez was later pronounced dead at a Grand Island hospital.
Ehlers sustained knife wounds in the attack and remained hospitalized for two days.
An independent investigation into the shooting continues. State law requires a grand jury investigation any time a person dies in state custody or while being apprehended.
