Coughlin’s Ulichney Commits To ODU

Dating back to her cousin Danielle Grega’s freshman year of college in 2014, Jolene Ulichney had taken a liking to Old Dominion.

“I fell more in love with it every time I went to the campus,” Ulichney said. “I loved the coaches and everything about it. They have a really good field hockey program, as well as their school and academics.”

Last week, Ulichney made it official. She, too, will attend Old Dominion.

Ulichney, a junior center-midfielder for Coughlin, announced her verbal commitment to play field hockey at Old Dominion, where Grega was a two-time all-conference selection.

“It’s a big relief knowing that it’s off my shoulders,” Grega said. “I just need to continue to work hard.”

Ulichney’s most recent visit to the campus in Norfolk, Virginia, was in September.

She was joined on the trip by parents John and Denise Ulichney, as well as Grega, who’s a member of the U.S. women’s national team.

“We went to a football game — they beat Virginia Tech — it was a really big game,” Ulichney said. “I watched two of their field hockey games. I watched a practice. I just spent time with the team and the coaches and my family. We walked around campus a lot. It was a good weekend.”

Ulichney was the leading-scorer this year for Coughlin, which went 13-6 and earned a second-place finish in the District 2 Class 2A playoffs.

Old Dominion staff most recently watched Ulichney last month at the Shooting Star Thanksgiving Tournament in Richmond, Virginia.

Ulichney had also shown interest in Temple and Iowa before committing to Old Dominion.

“I’ve been on a lot of visits,” she said, “ but after this last tournament that we had over Thanksgiving break, it narrowed down.”

Crestwood graduate Ashleigh Thomas is a junior at Old Dominion. The Monarchs went 10-7 this past season with a 3-4 record in the Big East.

Ulichney is undecided in what she will study at Old Dominion, but she said the physical education field is a possibility.

Next year, Wilkes-Barre Area will merge Coughlin, GAR and Meyers into one team.

Ulichney is one of two NCAA Division I commits anticipated to play for Wilkes-Barre Area with the other being Coughlin defender Ali Tedik, who will play at Temple.
