14 cities in Japan bid for 2019 RWC games

November 5, 2014

TOKYO (AP) — Sapporo and Sendai are among 14 cities in Japan that have applied to host matches at the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Sapporo hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics and Sendai was hit hard by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Kyoto, the historic former capital, was also among the applicants, tournament organizers said on Wednesday.

The 80,000-seat National Stadium in Tokyo, which will also be the centerpiece of the 2020 Olympics, will be the main venue for the tournament.

Other bidding cities included Osaka, Kobe, Fukuoka and Nagasaki.

Organizers said the chosen cities will be announced early next year. They did not say how many.

The 2019 tournament will be the first time rugby’s showcase event is hosted in Asia, and the first time to be staged in a nation outside the traditional top tier of the sport.
