Hockey Trainer Dies in Pickup Game

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) _ The 34-year-old trainer for a minor league hockey team died after he collapsed while playing in a pickup hockey game.

Chris Fleming of the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League died Thursday. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause.

``He came off the ice, was joking around and a minute later someone looked over and he was on the floor,″ Hitmen general manager Kelly Kisio told the Calgary Sun. ``This is very difficult _ everyone is in shock.″

Calgary Flames assistant equipment manager Les Jarvis, a former police officer, performed CPR., the newspaper said. Fleming was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Fleming was part of the training staff of the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders for 10 years before joining the Hitmen in 1998.

The Hitmen canceled practice Thursday and planned to wear commemorative patches on their uniform. The team was to play at home Friday against Saskatoon.

Fleming’s father, Fred, is director of special services for the Denver Broncos.
