India Rebel’s Land Mine Kills 4

December 14, 1997

GAUHATI, India (AP) _ Tribal militants in eastern India triggered a remote-control land mine under a passing military vehicle Sunday, killing four soldiers and injuring nine others.

The attack occurred in Assam state’s western Kokrajhar district, 140 miles west of the local capital, Gauhati.

There was no claim of responsibility, but police said they suspected the National Democratic Front of Bodoland.

Since 1986, fighting in the group’s campaign for an independent homeland for the Bodo tribe has killed an estimated 500 people.

In eastern Assam, border guards arrested a Bodo militant with $1.7 million in foreign currency _ including $1 million in U.S. dollars _ allegedly intended to buy arms.
