Suspect dies after being handcuffed in California beach city
LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Southern California authorities say a man who snatched a woman’s cell phone and then fought with bystanders died after he was detained by police.
Officials in Long Beach say officers handcuffed the man late Monday and then noticed he was in medical distress. The officers removed the cuffs and began CPR, but the man died at the scene in the city south of downtown Los Angeles.
He was identified Thursday as Shawn Dunford, a 41-year-old transient. An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.
Police say officers initially responded to reports of a woman screaming near the city’s beach. Investigators say the man fought with bystanders who tried to detain him after he stole the woman’s phone.
