Israel’s Netanyahu calls war crimes court probe “absurd”

January 17, 2015

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s premier says the International Criminal Court’s decision to launch a probe into possible war crimes in Palestinian territories is “absurd” and “preposterous.”

In a harshly worded statement Saturday, Benjamin Netanyahu says the ultimate folly of the decision is that the democracy of Israel is being targeted while “the terrorist war criminals of Hamas are the ones who are going to be pressing the charges.”

He said he wouldn’t be “surprised if ISIS, al-Qaida and Hezbollah follow suit.”

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court launched a preliminary probe Friday that could take on allegations of Israeli war crimes during last summer’s Gaza war.

Netanyahu said the “lofty goals of the ICC are being turned upside-down” and Palestinians were cynically manipulating the court to deny Israel’s right to defend itself.
