Avon Theatre to screen Oscar hopefuls

The Avon will be celebrating the upcoming Academy Awards by hosting an Oscar-nominated film festival from Feb. 2 through Feb. 24. This year’s lineup includes five feature films as well as short films from all three categories (animated, live action and documentary).

The animated Oscar-nominated shorts are “Animal Behaviour,” “Bao,” “Late Afternoon,” “One Small Step,” and “Weekends.” Showtimes are Thursday, Feb. 7, at 6:15 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m.; and Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 8:10 p.m.

The live-action short films are “Detainment,” “Fauve,” “Marguerite,” “Madre,” and “Skin.” Showtimes are Thursday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m.; and Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m.

Finally, the documentary shorts are “Black Sheep,” “End Game,” “Lifeboat,” “A Night at the Garden,” and “Period. End of Sentence.” Showtime is Saturday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m.

The five feature films are “Free Solo,” nominated for best documentary feature; “Roma,” nominated for best picture and nine other awards, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” nominated for best adapted screenplay and two acting categories; “A Star is Born,” nominated for best picture among other awards; and “Green Book,” also nominated for best picture and a handful of other Oscars.

“Free Solo” is playing on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. “Roma” will be screened on Sunday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m.; “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” will play on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m.; “A Star is Born” will be featured on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m., while “Green Brook” will be shown on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 11:00 a.m.

Admission to all 12 screening is $35 for members and $75 for non-members. Individual tickets are $8 for members and $13 for non-members. Carte Blanche members can get into individual screenings for free.
