Dimitrios Papadatos wins New Zealand Open
QUEENSTOWN, New Zealand (AP) — Australia’s Dimitrios Papadatos posted his first win as a professional when he surged away from his challengers Sunday to claim the New Zealand Golf Open by four strokes.
The 22-year-old Papadatos had never led a professional tournament entering the final round before taking a one-shot lead in Sunday’s fourth round at The Hills course near the winter resort of Queenstown. He showed no signs of nerves or pressure and overcame bleak weather conditions to shoot five birdies on the back nine in a six-under 66.
Papadatos finished with an 18-under tally of 270, four shots ahead of New Zealander Mark Brown who was a further shot ahead of compatriot David Klein. Brown, who started the day in second place, had a last-round 69 while Klein shot a 67.
