Ceausescu Dismisses Rumors About Romanian Atom Bomb
BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) _ Romanian President Nicolae Ceausescu in a published interview dismissed speculation about his country’s nuclear weapon capabilities, but stopped short of denying Romania has such arms.
The Yugoslavian weekly Danas raised the issue following months of rumors that Romania is building nuclear weapons. Speculation heightened in April when Ceausescu said his country has the potential to manufacture the arms.
″There always are insane people who speculate,″ Danas quoted Ceausescu as saying. ″I do not even wish to discuss this, to lower myself to such a level.″
The weekly also asked the Romanian leader what he does for recreation, and quoted him as saying he likes watching the U.S. detective series ″Kojak.″ But, the leader was quoted as saying, ″My hobby is achieving socialism in Romania.″
