WASHINGTON (AP) _ President Bush is going to North Carolina this week to help his former presidential rival, Elizabeth Dole, raise money for her Senate campaign.
The White House added a morning round-table on welfare policy to the president’s schedule for the Wednesday trip to Charlotte, N.C. _ an official-business event that means the cost of Bush’s travel will be split between the taxpayers and the Republican Party.
White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, who was spokesman for Dole’s presidential campaign in 1999 before switching sides to Bush, said the president will meet with welfare-to-work officials and community leaders before headlining the fund raiser.
``North Carolina has shown first hand how to help people move from welfare to work successfully,″ Fleischer said Monday.
Over lunch, Bush is expected to raise more than $1 million for Dole, Rep. Robin Hayes, R-N.C., and the state GOP.
