Shorb leads U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur
CHARLESTON, N.C. (AP) _ Connie Shorb of York, Pa., shot a 3-over-par 75 on Monday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of qualifying in the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.
``It’s been a long time since I have been a rookie anywhere,″ said Shorb, 50, who had three birdies and six birdies on the Yeamans Hall course despite a pinched nerve in her back. ``It’s a little sore. I got a little sloppy at the end, but I haven’t really played enough to trust it.″
Jean Smith of Boise, Idaho, the 1995 winner, and Judy Oliver of Sewickley, Pa., a three-time Curtis Cup player, were a stroke back along with Jackie Schwarz of Schaumburg, Ill.; Nancy Smith, Savannah, Ga.; Cristina Marsans of Spain; Toni Wiesner of Fort Worth, Texas; and Helene Gosse of Pittsburgh.
Defending champion Gayle Borthwick of Mississauga, Ontario, shot an 80.
The low 64 scorers will advance to match play after Tuesday’s second round of qualifying. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday.
