January 11, 2019

An Aiken man who died in a Columbia prison last week was strangled, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Wednesday.

Isaac Starke, 52, was found unresponsive in his Broad River Correctional Institution cell on Sunday, Jan. 6, according to the state corrections department.

The coroner said Starke died from asphyxiation due to strangulation. Watts, as of Wednesday afternoon, had not yet determined if Starke had been killed or if he had taken his own life.
