GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — Police in south Mississippi are investigating a shooting that left a man in critical condition.

Gulfport police Deputy Chief Chris Loposser said he was shot just after midnight on Wednesday. Officers had responded to the area of Prudie Circle after receiving a report of a shooting, and the man was taken to a hospital.

Loposser said a bag of marijuana was found near the scene.

Loposser said tells The Sun Herald that the man was in critical condition when he arrived at the hospital. He said the victim has some "significant internal injuries."
