INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Ivan Olivares scored 26 points, including the winning basket on a rebound with 1:07 to play Friday night, as Venezuela beat Panama 82-79 to finish second in Pool A of the men’s basketball competition at the Pan Am Games.

Olivares converted a missed layup by Gabriel Estaba who had stolen the ball from Ernesto Malcolm at midcourt.

Malcolm missed a 3-point field goal with 45 seconds to play and Venezuela spread its offense for a dunk by Carl Herrera with 17 seconds left for the final margin. Mario Galvez missed a 3-pointer that would have tied the score with three seconds to play.

Venezuela finished the round-robin with a 3-1 record, the only loss coming to the United States, 109-74.

Panama, 2-2, finishes third in the five-team pool and both teams will play in Monday’s quarterfinals against opponents to be decided by Saturday’s Pool B games.

Herrera added 14 points for Venezuela, while Rolando Frazer led Panama with 22 points and nine rebounds.
