Cargo ship arriving Monday in New Bedford
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — The first heavy freighter to offload cargo at the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal is arriving this week.
Mayor Jon Mitchell and other civic leaders are expected to be at the scene Monday when the MV Thorco Svendborg arrives in port.
The vessel is delivering wind turbine components for a land-based project in Plymouth. The components, supplied by Spanish-based company Gamesa, will be transported later this summer to the project site.
The $113 million terminal was built specifically to handle heavy project loads like the components arriving Monday.
The one-of-a-kind facility in North America is capable of handling both traditional heavy cargo and serving as the staging area for offshore wind energy projects.
Anthony Sapienza, president of the New Bedford Economic Development Council calls the arrival “a milestone.”
