LUANDA, Angola (AP) _ Gunmen fired a missile at a passenger bus and then sprayed the vehicle with gunfire, killing at least 50 people, including several children, news reports said Monday.
The attack occurred Friday in northwestern Angola, Roman Catholic radio station Ecclesia said, citing local police. Many of the bodies were charred or blown to pieces in the attack, making an accurate victim count difficult.
No one has claimed responsibility but UNITA rebels or bandits are thought to have carried out the attack, which occurred on a highway near the city of Malanje, 250 miles east of Angola’s capital, Luanda.
Earlier this month UNITA rebels killed about 250 people in a refugee train ambush.
Angola, a former Portuguese colony, has endured an almost nonstop civil war since 1975 that has claimed more than 500,000 lives.
