T-birds finish middle of pack: Lozoya finishes 119th, Rodriguez 149th at state meet
BULLHEAD CITY — Two Mohave High School student-athletes competed among the best at the Division III Arizona Interscholastic Association Cross Country State Championships on Saturday.
Mohave T-birds junior Jaime Lozoya placed 119th with a time of 19 minutes, 14 seconds, and Mohave Lady T-birds junior Elena Rodriguez came in 149th place at 24:44.9 during their 5K runs at the Cave Creek Golf Course in the Phoenix area.
“I am really proud of them and I was very excited for them,” said Mohave head coach Casey Amann by email. “They enjoyed state and ran their best.”
This was Lozoya’s third trip to the state championship in as many seasons.
“Jaime is a natural runner and was a leader for the team this year,” Amann said. “It was a pleasure to watch him grow throughout the year and do so well in the end.”
Rodriguez has competed at state for two of her three seasons at Mohave.
“Elena was always focused on her running and doing her best,” the first-year Mohave cross country head coach said. “And I’m glad it all came together in the end for her.”
Lozoya competed among a field of 236 boys and Rodriguez was among 203 girls.
“It was fun,” said Rodriguez by email. “It’s such an amazing opportunity to be able to go and compete there — weather really sucked since I raced at 1:15 p.m. so I really felt that sun beating down on me.
“I kept it really consistent and had good breath and stride.
“I’m not really mad at my performance, so I would call this a successful second race at state — can’t wait to be back there next year.”
