Alien Smuggler Gets Three-Year Sentence in Drownings
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ A man convicted in the drowning of two illegal immigrants and his co-pilot, who died when their overcrowded boat capsized off Florida, was sentenced to three years in prison on Friday.
Theophilus Saunders was piloting the 19-foot boat packed with 13 people, including 10 Haitian and Jamaican refugees, when it capsized five miles offshore last year. His co-captain, a second adult, and a 16-month-old child drowned.
Saunders was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, alien smuggling and conspiracy. The sentence is the maximum permitted under federal guidelines.
