Suspect caught after robbery of Independence bank

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — A suspect in a morning bank robbery was caught just over two hours later in a neighborhood about a quarter-mile away from the bank, authorities say.

Rolland Scales Jr. was arrested on the 6600 block of Lafayette Boulevard at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, according to the FBI. A gun and cash were also found.

Authorities believe Scales entered the Chase Bank at 6200 Brecksville Road at about 11 a.m. armed with a snub-nosed black revolver.

Wearing black sweat pants, white basketball shoes, a maroon sweat shirt and a gray head covering, the male suspect demanded $250,000 from the teller, telling her to put it in a black duffel bag.

The teller filled the bag with an undisclosed amount of cash and ran from the bank, heading south to a nearby treeline.

A witness told investigators that the suspect was seen running along Lafayette. Police used a K9 unit to search the area and found Scales hiding in a landscaped area, the FBI says. He surrendered without incident.

Federal charges are expected to be filed against Scales, according to the FBI.
