Burning Flares Thrown on Abortion Clinic Roof
SOQUEL, Calif. (AP) _ Burning road flares were thrown on the roof of an abortion clinic early Tuesday morning in an apparent arson attempt, authorities said.
Three flares landed on the asphalt roof of the Choice Medical Clinic, sending smoke into the building and charring the roof slightly, Sgt. Steve Hartness of the Santa Cruz County sheriff’s office said.
The had clinic received no threats before the building’s fire alarms went off at about 2:30 a.m., director Genevieve Grein said, and it had not previously been a target of anti-abortion violence.
The sheriff’s office, local fire investigators and a six-month-old federal abortion violence task force were investigating.
The clinic opened as usual Tuesday morning, Grein said.
Arsonists hit four other California abortion clinics earlier this month.
