Vikings run away from Bluejays in the second half
JOHNSON CREEK — The Johnson Creek girls basketball team trailed by three points at halftime but visiting Parkview used a 16-4 run in the opening stages of the second half to break the game open en route to topping the Bluejays 44-29 in a Trailways South Conference game on Thursday.
Johnson Creek’s Brooke Joseph tallied 13 points and Kaitlyn Kuhl chipped in seven.
“In the first half we did a really good job pressuring them,” Johnson Creek head coach Jake Wedig said. “We forced some turnovers and got a lot of good looks early. They adjusted really well. They kind of figured out how to get past it and got layups.”
Joseph scored 11 first-half points and had two baskets in transition after Parkview turnovers against the press.
The Bluejays trailed 16-13 with two minutes to go in the first half after Joseph knocked down a 3-pointer.
In the second half, Johnson Creek (1-8, 1-3 conference) struggled to hit outside shots and rebound against a bigger Parkview (3-5, 3-1) team.
“We strive to create turnovers and increase the number of possessions,” Wedig said. “We don’t help ourselves on the defensive end we give them two, three or four shots a possession.”
Kuhl hit a running layup to cut the Vikings’ lead to 12 midway through the second half.
With less then six minutes remaining, Kuhl connected on a shot from beyond the arc and Joseph banked in a floater to make the score 38-24 in favor of Parkview.
Each team utilized full-court pressure throughout the game to disrupt the offensive rhythm.
“I thought we protected the ball well, we just had a tight lid on the rim in the second half,” Wedig said. “They made just about everything.”
For Parkview, Taylor Burrell totaled 11 points and Kristine Mumm finished with 10.
Johnson Creek’s Morgan Toebe scored five points.
Johnson Creek travels to Horicon on Friday, Dec. 28, at 6 p.m.
