Sheriff: Man found shot dead in Louisiana sugarcane field
ROSEDALE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana sheriff says a man who was found dead in a sugarcane field has been identified.
Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi tells news outlets that investigators believe 28-year-old Travis Smart was shot to death, and then dumped in the field not far from Interstate 10 in Rosedale early Tuesday. Stassi says the investigation began after a caller discovered his body New Year’s Day morning.
Investigators say tire tracks have led them to believe that someone pulled off the road and pushed Smart’s body out of a vehicle before turning around and going back toward I-10.
Stassi says investigators received tips based on photos of Smart’s tattoos that authorities had publicly shared. He says an autopsy has not been performed and that it is unclear exactly when the shooting happened.
