Bulgarians swelter under heat wave
SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) — Bulgarians are seeking relief in the mountains, city parks, beaches and lakes as temperatures are expected to hit record highs of 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit.)
Meteorologists on Tuesday said the heat wave will continue for another day or two before showers are forecast to bring some respite in the second half of the week.
Health officials said dozens of mostly elderly people were admitted in hospitals with heart ailments and breathing difficulties.
Officials urged the elderly to stay indoors until early evening. City authorities have set up spots where water is offered for free.
Police banned heavy trucks from main roads, warning that high temperatures had softened the asphalt.
