Huskers pick up walk-on from Georgia

December 19, 2018

Sam Shurtleff seems to have at least a couple of qualities in common with most of Nebraska’s walk-on class.

For instance, he grew up a Husker fan and always dreamed of playing football at Memorial Stadium.

There’s really only one difference: The 6-foot-3 athlete isn’t from Gothenberg or Kearney or York. He’s from Watkinsville, Georgia.

Shurtleff, though, is set to join NU’s 2019 walk-on class, announcing his verbal commitment Tuesday afternoon on Twitter.

Shurtleff told the Journal Star that he’s always been a Nebraska fan and that, though he never camped at NU, he got on the radar screen by emailing and messaging the coaches.

They liked what they saw, apparently.

Surtleff is the 12th known member of NU’s 2019 walk-on class, a group that could eventually finish at more than 20.

He is the second out-of-state walk-on in the group, joining Loveland, Colorado, receiver Zach Weinmaster.

It’s possible that some of the commits will be announced Wednesday along with the early scholarship signees, though others will likely be announced in February.
