CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) _ Jeffra Gausepohl scored a career-high 29 points, including 13 of 16 free throws, as No. 12 Virginia defeated Maryland 68-56 Tuesday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup.

Maryland (8-6, 3-2) cut the margin to 55-50 with 2:52 remaining, but the Cavaliers (12-2, 5-0) scored the next four points and were not challenged again.

Gausepohl, a 6-foot-6 sophomore center, made eight of 12 field-goal attempts. She scored 15 first-half points, including all of Virginia’s points in a 10-2 run at the end of the half that helped the Cavs to a 30-18 lead.

Wendy Palmer added 12 points and nine rebounds for Virginia. Jenny Boucek had 11 points and nine assists.

The Terrapins were led by Monica Adams with 17 points. Bonnie Rimkus had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Kwana Williams added 12 points.
