COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The Clemson flag is flying over the South Carolina State House after the Tigers’ national championship win over Alabama. Clemson will have a parade and fan celebration at campus and the football stadium Saturday. The Clemson flag was also atop the capital’s dome two years back when Clemson won the crown.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels says “the book is closed” on him interviewing for other open head coaching jobs and that he is committed to the Patriots moving forward. McDaniels says he’s grateful for the opportunity to interview with Green Bay over the weekend, but that he is “completely focused” on the Patriots and preparing for their divisional playoff matchup with the Chargers. Yesterday, Matt LaFleur accepted an offer to become the Packers next coach.
NEW YORK (AP) — The World Series champion Boston Red Sox had the highest payroll in Major League Baseball last season at $230 million. A record 24 teams had $100 million payrolls, and the Red Sox figure was the lowest for the top payroll since 2012. Overall, the league’s payrolls dropped for the first time since 2010, a decline attributable to drug and domestic violence suspensions and a player retiring at midseason.
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia has been cleared to resume working out, including baseball activities. The 38-year-old left-hander had a blockage in one artery to his heart and had a procedure Dec. 11 to insert a stent to clear the blockage. Yankees pitchers and catchers are scheduled to start spring training workouts on Feb. 14.
FLACHAU, Austria (AP) — American skiing great Mikaela Shiffrin has had her string of World Cup victories in the slalom snapped at eight. Petra Vlhova of Slovakia won in a dense snowfall today in Austria, topping Shiffrin by 0.15 seconds. Vlhova had finished runner-up to Shiffrin in each of the previous five slaloms this season, and is the only skier other than the American to have won a women’s slalom since the start of last season. Shiffrin holds the women’s record for most slalom wins in total, 37.
