FedEx Driver Shot and Killed In Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ A gunman killed a veteran Federal Express courier in a drug-infested neighborhood Tuesday morning, a first for the 20-year-old package company.
Police found William Moyer, a father of four, lying on a sidewalk near his delivery truck. He had been shot in the head.
″We’re looking at a robbery attempt, but there was no money taken,″ police Capt. John Apeldorn said.
Moyer, 37, was the first Federal Express courier slain on the job, according to Tom Martin, company spokesman in Memphis, Tenn.
Martin noted that couriers carry no cash, and said Moyer had not radioed in about any problems. He said the company’s couriers aren’t required to make a pickup or delivery if they feel threatened.
Manuel Rosado, 59, ownner of a nearby grocery store, said he and other residents have worked to improve the neighborhood over the past 10 years by chasing drug dealers off the corners.
But the shooting, Rosado said, shows how much further the neighborhood has to go.
″It’s a senseless crime, subhuman actually,″ Rosado said. ″I want whoever did it caught. It could have just as easy been me.″
