MONTANA-SENATE-FUNDRAISING

HELENA — Republican U.S. Senate candidate Matt Rosendale used excess donations from deep-pocketed GOP donors to pay himself back for personal loans from a previous congressional run, then he turned around and loaned that money right back to his Senate campaign, according to campaign records. That accounting shuffle, first reported by The Daily Beast, has given the Montana candidate a way to fund his campaign against incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester with money given by donors above the individual campaign contribution limits. By Matt Volz. SENT: 710 words, photos.

Shaunesy Cole, 36, was apprehended after a woman called 911 to report a man matching Cole’s description was trying to break into her house in the Bozeman Pass area, Park County Sheriff Scott Hamilton said. SENT: 370 words.

MONTANA GREEN PARTY-LAWSUIT

HELENA — Secretary of State Corey Stapleton plans to appeal to the Montana Supreme Court a state judge’s order to remove Montana Green Party candidates from the November ballot. Stapleton said Wednesday that he decided to appeal after reading the District Judge James Reynolds’ order that invalidated 87 signatures used to qualify the party for the ballot, making the signature-gathering effort fall short. Monday’s order “violates Montana Supreme Court rules and statute, and ignores Montana’s long established practice of inclusion in democracy,” Stapleton said. SENT: 470 words.

ENDANGERED CHILDREN

HELENA — The head of the state health department says child protection workers in Billings are facing “crisis level caseloads” leading the Division of Child and Family Services to decide to close its Livingston office and move that office’s caseworker jobs to Billings. The decision to close the Livingston office on Aug. 6 was criticized by caseworkers, law enforcement and court appointed special advocates, or CASA’s, who advocate on behalf of abused children in court. SENT: 450 words.
