NEW DELHI, India (AP) _ A boat evacuating people from a flooded village in southern India capsized, and at least 39 people drowned, the government’s All-India Radio said today.

The evacuees were from the village of Lakshimpuram in Andhra Pradesh state, which was inundated by the monsoon-swollen Godavari River, the radio said.

It said their boat hit a submerged electricity pole in the river and capsized Thursday night.

According to official count, at least 210 flood-related deaths have occurred in India since the start of the annual summer monsoon in late June. Large parts of northern and southeastern India have been flooded.
