Pittsburgh Airbnbs a trendy destination for Pa. seniors, company says
Booking a room -- or a whole apartment or house -- with Airbnb isn’t just for millennials anymore.
Adults over 60 are the fastest growing age group to book Airbnbs, according to research released by the company this week.
“Senior travelers represent a burgeoning portion of Airbnb’s guest community, using the power of the Airbnb platform to go beyond the traditional hotel districts and explore neighborhoods they might have otherwise missed,” the report stated.
Airbnb allows nearly anyone to offer a spare room or an entire apartment or house for rent to visitors through its app and website.
Pittsburgh is becoming a hot destination for Pennsylvania seniors looking to getaway.
The report noted that the number of Airbnb bookings in Pittsburgh by Pennsylvania adults over the age of 60 grew 86 percent over last year. Pittsburgh had the highest growth among Pennsylvania seniors, beating out Philadelphia by 12 percent.
Toronto, Lancaster, Pa., and Denver rounded out the top-five fastest growing destinations for Pennsylvania seniors, according to the Airbnb report.
Pennsylvania seniors have made about 500 bookings in Pittsburgh thus far this year, tied with Washington. They have made about 600 in Los Angeles and 900 in Philly.
Nationally, Los Angeles was the top destination for seniors with about 20,300 bookings so far this year. Seattle took second with about 17,200 and Pairs third with about 16,000.
