Man Pleads Guilty to Second-degree Murder in Death of Wife

June 25, 1985

MILWAUKEE (AP) _ A man accused of setting his wife afire after viewing the television movie ″The Burning Bed″ last year has pleaded guilty to a charge of second- degree murder while armed.

Joseph G. Brandt, 40, was accused in the complaint of being armed with a cigarette lighter when his wife, Sharon, 37, was doused with gasoline and set afire Oct. 8. She sustained severe burns over most of her body and died a week later.

Police have said that Brandt told them he got the idea of setting fire to his wife after watching the television show, which depicted the story of a woman who killed her husband by setting his bed afire because he had abused her for years.

Mrs. Brandt was set on fire near the family’s garage after returning home from her job about 10:30 p.m. the day the movie was shown on television.

Brandt made no comments during the hearing Monday.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge John McCormick scheduled sentencing for Aug. 1.
