GoFundMe: Retired Shelton firefighter admitted to ICU
ANSONIA — A retired Shelton volunteer firefighter was admitted to the intensive care unit at Yale New Haven Hospital earlier this month, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up to help pay his medical bills.
Opie Skurat, of Ansonia, was admitted to the ICU on Dec. 17. He had previously been diagnosed with stage four lymphoma in 2017.
“It has been a long, difficult road,” said the GoFundMe page created by Alex DaSilva on behalf of Carla Skurat, Opie Skurat’s wife.
When he checked into the ICU this month, DaSilva said, Skurat was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder.
Doctors appointments, chemotherapy treatments, surgeries and hospitals stays have kept Opie and Carla Skurat out of work. During all of this, DaSilva said, Carla Skurat continues to try to care for their songs, 13-year-old Jake and 10-year-old Ryan.
“Carla has been trying to keep life as close to normal as she can for the boys which has been a not-so-easy task,” DaSilva said. “They need our help to make Christmas as peaceful as it can be by not worrying about finances.”
The goal for the fundraising page is $15,000. As of Saturday, $3,050 had been donated.
