Rochester police investigate infant death
Rochester police are investigating the death of an infant Tuesday.
According to police, a 17-year-old female and 19-year-old male arrived at Mayo Clinic Hospital – Saint Marys about 11:30 p.m. to report a stillborn infant. They led medical staff to the infant’s body in a car in the parking lot outside the hospital. The 17-year-old reported that she gave birth about 10 a.m. Tuesday, panicked and went to sleep the rest of the day.
The baby was near-term, said Rochester Police Lt. Mike Sadauskis, meaning it was at or near nine months of development. There were no obvious signs of injury or trauma to the infant, he added.
An autopsy will be conducted, Sadauskis said. Further test results may take days, he added.
“We’re in the very early stages in the investigation,” Sadauskis said.
